What's New?
I will be participating in the Western Art Showcase at the Calgary Stampede again this summer. Stampede dates this year are July 6 to July 15, with Sneak-a-Peek evening on July 5. The invitational Art preview evening is Wednesday, July 4. I am planning a boothful of new paintings and look forward to seeing you there.
Tips on Hanging Artwork
Many people struggle with the hanging of their artwork and here are a few tips to get you going in the right direction. First of all, your painting will look best hung at eye level. As a good rule of thumb place the center or focal point of the painting about 5 and a half ft. off the ground. If the painting is to hang over a piece of furniture such as a couch or side table, hang the painting as close to the furniture as seems comfortable. In the case of a room where most of your time is spent seated, paintings may need to be even lower. Hanging paintings too high is one of the most common decorating mistakes.
What size of painting looks best over any given piece of furniture, or over a fireplace? A good guideline is to measure the piece of furniture or fireplace, and multiply that measurement by .75. For instance if your fireplace measures 72 in. across, a painting that is approximately 54 in. across would be an ideal choice. If you are hanging a painting over the headboard of your bed, using the standard mattress size measurements, the painting you will hang over a king-size bed would be approximately 60 in. wide, over a queen-size bed would be 45 in. wide, and over a double would be 40 in. wide. These measurements are a good place to start for a balanced look.
Another option is to hang paintings in a grouping, either related paintings (similar subjects), or different subjects all framed the same. An easy way to handle the hanging of a grouping is to cut a piece of paper the size of the area you want to fill (using the guidelines above), and then arrange your paintings within that piece of paper to determine hanging position. Paintings in a grouping need to have some sort of common arrangement -- either bottoms should all line up, tops should all line up or the centers of the paintings should line up. Keep the paintings relatively close together to maintain continuity.
With the average sofa measuring 74 in. to 96 in., your over-the-sofa painting or grouping will measure 55 in. to 72 in. across.
You know what they say, rules are made to be broken, so these are just guidelines, meant to help you when you need a place to start or feel that something is a little off with the hanging of your artwork but you're not sure what. Certainly trust your own eye and don't be afraid to experiment.
